WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017

The WorldSkills Competition, a flagship event of the WorldSkills International, organised every two years, is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry.

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, hosted the 44th WorldSkills Competition from October 14th to 19th, 2017. This marked the first time the competition had been held in the Middle East and Africa region. During the event, over 1,300 participants from around the world descended upon the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, one of the largest exhibition centers in the Middle East.

WorldSkills India

As part of Skill India mission, WorldSkills India is an initiative of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India. NSDC, through its WorldSkills India initiative, has been leading the country's participation at WorldSkills International competitions since 2011.

The Indian team, consisting of 28 participants, represented the country in 26 skills at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.

  • Anuradh Thandayan Madappurakkal 

    CNC Turning

    "Never Give Up" Anuradh hails from a small district of Kannur in southern state Kerala. He completed his diploma in Tool & Die Engineering from GEDEE Technical Training Institute, Coimbatore last year and has since been undergoing training in CNC Machine operations and programming at his institute. He continues to learn more about CNC lathe operations, programming and manufacturing using CAD/CAM software and is now preparing hard to compete at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
  • Sarath Viswesh Prabhakar 

    CNC Milling

    "We generate fears while we sit, we overcome them all by action." Sarath, as he is fondly called, is currently pursuing his diploma in Tool & Die Engineering at Gedee Technical Training Institute, Coimbatore. While training in CNC milling and cam programming at GTTI, he participated and successfully secured first place in final selection competition at IndiaSkills 2016. He moved to the subsequent rounds held at the National level. An energetic and enthusiastic Sarath, wants to win a medal for his country and make his family proud too.
  • Tamil Selvan PERIYASWAMY 

    Plastic Die Engineering

    "Never back-off from challenges" Tamil Selvan hails from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He completed a diploma course in Tool & Die Engineering from GTTI, Coimbatore and is now undergoing Industrial Training. His passion for engineering and determination to excel has helped him in achieving his first major milestone - to represent India in the Plastic Die Engineering at WorldSkills, Abu Dhabi. He has been learning about the hi-tech advancements in mould making, mould design and manufacturing using the CAD/CAM software and CNC Machining to compete against some of the most skilled workers. His aim is to win a Gold medal for India and make his country and family proud.
  • Asroff Jamal

    Jewellery Design

    "Never Back Down." Asrof Jamal comes from the state of West Bengal. He studied Jewelry Manufacturing in Bangalore and got selected for the IndiaSkills 2016 competition, where he stood second and in the subsequent regional rounds at Ganjam and Jaipur, he didn’t fail to impress with his skills. Now, he wants to make his mark at the international level and aims to bring laurels for the country.
  • Varun Hanumanth Gowda 

    Mechatronics

    "Let’s master the skills" Varun hails from a small town near Bangalore and is one of the brightest candidates. After his bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, he was fortunate to get a maintenance job in Toyota, a leading automobile company. An agile and friendly worker, Varun is known as a ‘problem solver’ amongst his team members and is recognized for finding unique solutions for technical issues in the line machines. He says that he is ever-ready to learn and challenge himself for the most difficult tasks. This passion encouraged him to participate in the World Skills selection rounds. After winning a gold medal at IndiaSkills 2016, he is now aiming to win a medal at WorldSkills 2017 with his team mate.

    Mechatronics

    "Let’s go for Gold" Anand is passionate about his studies and is known amongst his peers for his creative thinking. He has always been applauded for his efficient problem-solving skills during his three-year Mechatronics course at the Toyota Institute. After joining as a maintenance member in Toyota, Anand was very passionate to make his mark and kept practicing Kaizen in various areas and gained the ‘Best Kaizen Mind’ title in his department. He participated in Asia Pacific Skill Contest 2015 where he won a Bronze. At the IndiaSkills 2016 his team won a Gold medal. Anand believes in learning and sharing his knowledge with everyone around him. Presently his team is preparing vigorously for the WorldSkills competition.
  • Marshal Lazar Wilson

    MCAD

    "Motivating and honing skills to realize dreams for a podium finish" Marshal is a professionally qualified tool and die making engineer from NTTF, a technical training institute in Bangalore. A creative boy from his childhood, he enjoyed drawing, do-it-yourself concepts and was always interested in using different computer softwares to hone his creative skills. After finishing high school, he developed a deeper interest in design and wanted to turn his passion into his career. His degree in Mechanical Engineering Design-CAD from NTTF offered him that special training which gave him direction for his future. Marshal has participated in various boot camps of AUTODESK and his presentation was amongst the top five design concept presentations.
  • Mohit Dudeja  

    Confectionary

    "You earn your trophies at practice, but you pick them up at competitions." 20-year old Mohit holds the position of an Assistant Pastry Chef at India’s first specialised baking school, Lavonne Academy of Baking Science & Pastry Arts. An alumnus of Lavonne, he graduated with a diploma in Patisserie offered by the institute in affiliation with City & Guilds, London in 2016. Following his training, he interned at the Trident Hotel, Mumbai for three months before returning to his alma mater to serve as a team member of pastry chefs. A stellar feat for a professional as young and as talented as Mohit, he has been to Korea to enhance his skills in Sugar Art, for his participation at WorldSkills 2017. Mohit has also competed in various national and international competitions such as JPC, India and WorldSkills UK. He loves practicing yoga and likes participating in marathons.

    "A canvas is something that anyone needs to paint his/ her life" Born with a painter’s brush in his hand, Nitish Kumar, 20-years, is studying Fashion & Apparel Design at the Army Institute of Fashion & Design (AIFD), Bangalore. Adept at using both physical and digital paint, Nitish has a keen eye for detail and a flair for balanced art and design. His nimble fingers and neat execution have earned him the sobriquet of a "Magician". Nitish has designed and executed several murals in various media at his college. He has won an international gold medal, two national gold medals and one bronze in painting during his school days. He has also been a part of the design team that won the national level fashion competition at IIT, Mumbai in 2015 and was fortunate enough to present a portrait of Mr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the late President himself. His journey to the World Skills competition, Abu Dhabi has been exciting which motivates him to improvise his skills every day.
  • Meher Rishika Nori 

    ITSSB

    "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish" Be it her college, her decisions or her career choice; everything revolves around her passion for Information Technology (IT). Meher chose to take part in the IndiaSkills 2016 where she was declared as a winner in IT Software Solutions for Business. Amongst 300 participants pan- India, she was the only female to qualify for the finale. After receiving the national award, she found it as a window to the world. She gives the credit of her success to a unique program at her college - WISE, which laid the foundation to her dream in IT SSB. The thirst of doing something innovative and out-of-box thinking is what makes her distinct from others.

    Protype Modeling

    "Mission – Gold!" Kiran is an ITI Electrician from Karkala, Karnataka. He is a 19-year-old technocrat who loves to play cricket and listen to music. His aim has always been to work hard and do whatever it takes to perfect his skill and thus, he participated in the IndiaSkills competition where he succeeded by winning a Gold medal. His next aim is to compete at the international level and bring a gold medal for the country.

    Web Design

    "I have an unquenched thirst to learn more about designing and developing new applications and aspiration to be one of the best designers in the country." Saurabh is currently pursuing his Bachelors in Information Technology from Acharaya College, Mumbai. His parents continue to inspire him to strive for excellence. As far as he can remember, he has been passionate about web development and looks forward to learning new technologies. His hobbies include playing cricket and volleyball. While undergoing an IT course from Aptech, Saurabh got the opportunity to participate in IndiaSkills 2016. After winning at the regional and the national rounds, he has been preparing for a big win at WorldSkills 2017, Abu Dhabi. He continues to participate in various competitions to gain confidence and equip himself for problem solving techniques with speed and accuracy.

    Beauty Theraphy

    "My father served in armed forces and I fully understand what it means to service the nation. To me, winning a medal in the WorldSkills competition would be my ultimate tribute to the country, which has given me all that I am today." Karishma, a small-town girl from Pune, with a goal to become a successful Beauty Therapist, took up the course soon after finishing her high school. She attributes her personality to be fit for her profession - a keen observer, quick learner and gentle demeanor; making her determination strong to pursue her passion. She believes in her motto of providing service with a smile. Karishma had the privilege to work and train under some of the best trainers and beauty experts in India. She represented India at WorldSkills UK 2015 and further, undertook specialized training in Singapore. She is confident to give her best at the upcoming skills competitions at Abu Dhabi.

    Mobile Robotics

    "Robots are good at things that are structured and those structures we can conquer when we work hard" Vibhor is a robotics enthusiast who loves designing, fabricating and developing robots. Currently in his final year of Engineering at MIT Academy of Engineering Pune, Maharashtra; he has already won a gold at IndiaSkills 2016 in mobile robotics. He also represented India at EuroSkills 2016, Sweden and is now aiming to prove his mettle at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi.
  • Samarth Goudar  

    Mobile Robotics

    "When you're surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible." Samarth is an engineer with a passion for robotics and automation. He has completed his Bachelors of Technology with specialization in Electronics and Telecommunication from MIT Academy of Engineering, Pune, Maharashtra. He has been an active participant in various robotics competitions including the Indian robotics Olympiad (IRO) and the Robocon. He stood as a runner up at the final selections of WorldSkills India2015 in mobile robotics. He won a gold at the IndiaSkills 2016 and is now preparing hard to represent India at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
  • Omkara Savant 

    Welding

    "Fitness of mind and body is a key mantra to work efficiently and to perfect your skills." Omkar is a young 21-year-old trainee welder, working with the leading automobile company Mahindra Ltd. in Pune. He was inspired by his peer Sachin Narale who won at Brazil 2015 and also selected him for his job at Mahindra. Under Sachin’s mentorship, Omkar has been putting a lot of effort into his training programs to improve his skill in welding. He has participated in national competitions and then, was selected to participate in IndiaSkills 2016, where he won a Bronze medal. Omkar stood first in the final round selection for World Skills and is now going to represent India at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.
  • Aditya Pratap Singh Rathore

    Automobile Technology

    "I want to make my parents and nation proud by achieving success at the WS Abu Dhabi 2017." Aditya hails from the city of the Taj Mahal - Agra. With a childhood fantasy about cars, aided by his father’s profession of being a Manager at the Tata Motors’ Dealership, Aditya joined a Full-Term Apprentice (FTA) Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV) trade in Pune. When he moved from Agra to Pune, he knew little about the intricacies of automobile technology. During his formal training, he came to know about the nuances of complex systems that power modern day automobiles. He is passionate about Automobile Technology and has a hunger for solving complex problems using his knowledge and skills. After winning IndiaSkills and the final selections for Abu Dhabi, Aditya is all geared up to put his best foot forward at the WS Abu Dhabi 2017.
  • Rahim Momin

    Brick Laying

    "No work is big or small. One must have a goal and a dream to make that goal into a reality." Rohim Momin is a 21-year old Mason from West Bengal, India. In 2013, he started working for ATS, a renowned infrastructure company in New Delhi. In 2015, he represented ATS at a Regional Competition held in Delhi and was awarded a Silver Medal for excellence in bricklaying work. After participating in IndiaSkills 2016 competition, he has been training for WorldSkills 2017. He is completely dedicated towards his goal of achieving a medal at Abu Dhabi.

    Wall & Floor Tiling

    "Win or no-win; I will give my best at the WorldSkills competition." Shailendra is a young and enthusiastic tiler. He started working at a very early age and always thought of doing something unique to make his family proud. While working at a construction site, he came to know about the WorldSkills competition. After a full-year of training, he participated in the selections which, according to him has changed his life. Through his hard work, and sincerest dedication, he won IndiaSkills Competition. He is excited about WorldSkills Abu Dhabi and wants to bring a medal home.
  • Harsha Prabakaran

    Electronics

    "No matter how daunting it might be, if you work hard believing it can be done, it will be done!" Harsha was born and brought up in Chennai. He started presenting science projects from the age of 9 years and later, found his niche in electronics. He gained a Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. During this time, he realized the importance of specialized skills in his field. He dedicated a lot of his time developing his skill-set along with academic proficiency. His commitment and hard work has resulted in a funded internship at France, publication of a paper in IEEE journal and most importantly, winning a Gold-Medal at IndiaSkills 2016, amongst other accomplishments. He has also filed for a few patents and has authored and published a couple of books.

    Hair Dressing

    "Determination, focus and love for your skill can help you reach for the stars." At the age of 11, Karan had already resolved that he wanted to be a renowned Hair Dressing Artist. He always wanted to follow an unconventional path, which aided his creativity and love for styling flourish. After a post-graduation in hair dressing from Blossom Kochhar College of Creative Arts & Design (BKCCAD), at the age of 17, he started his career as a shampoo boy at a local salon. After struggling for 9 months, he managed to get a job where he worked his way up to the post of a senior hairdresser. It was during this time that he participated and made a win at the IndiaSkills Competition 2016. Now, he is aiming for a podium finish at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi.

    Cooking

    "Somewhere over the rainbow, the skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream, really come true." Sahil was born and brought up in a small town Naraingarh, Ambala in Haryana. He was inspired with his mom’s cooking, who encouraged her to pursue a career in the food and beverage industry. He joined the Indian Institute of Hotel Management at Pusa, New Delhi, where he received some of the best lessons on palette development and received right guidance, mentorship and infrastructure to pursue his dream to be a great chef. He was awarded "The Most Dedicated Student Award” from the institute, which motivated him to participate at the UK Skill competition 2016. He also won a medal in a culinary competition at the national event - AAHAR. He is looking forward to representing India at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi. Enchanted by the culinary world, Sahil strives for new challenges and experiences to explore the diversity of flavours.

    "Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn. Two motives must never stop - - your will to achieve and the process of learning." Karan was born in Ludhiana and later moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with his parents. He found his passion and interest in food, cuisine and travelling; and to turn his passion into profession, he enrolled at the Indian Institute of Hotel Management, New Delhi. It was here that he discovered more about the industry, found the right mentors, got training and opportunities. After winning the IndiaSkills competition, he was also awarded as the Best Culinary Student for exhibiting innovative acumen through skill display in the field of Culinary Arts & Sciences by the Young Chefs Association of India. Further, he represented India in Restaurant Service Skill at UK Skills Competition. Karan is fascinated by the world of wines and spirits and is always keen to broaden his knowledge and experience in this evolving profession.

    "Quality is not an act, it is a habit" Shahad is a self-motivated Paint Technician who loves to refurbish old and damaged cars. He hails from Kozhikode, Kerala and is presently working with Maruti Suzuki Service network as a Paint Technician. He loves to play football and cricket, enjoys music and finds chatting with his friends most destressing. He won a Gold in IndiaSkills 2016 and participated in UK Skills. He has also been trained at BASF Academy, Indonesia to compete at the upcoming WorldSkills 2017, Abu Dhabi.

    Auto Body Repair

    "Nothing is impossible, work hard to achieve your goals' Manmohan hails from Jhajjar, one of the districts in Haryana. A seasoned Auto-Body Repair Technician, he loves to repair and experiment with damaged vehicles. He joined the Vocational Training Program for Auto Body Repair (VTP-ABR) at Maruti Suzuki in Gurgaon, where he got the chance to participate at the Indiaskills competition in 2016 and made the country proud by winning a Gold medal in Auto body Repair category. He has also represented India at the UK Skills Competition. To hone his skills further and to learn new auto body repair techniques, Manmohan joined Car-O-Liner Training Academy in Bangkok. With significant improvements in the skill, he is all charged to earn laurels for the country at the WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017.

    "I aspire to revolutionize the fashion industry through my unique style and identity." Talat Razia is an undergraduate student of Fashion Design at Pearl Academy. She is an enthusiastic and a creative candidate who aims to make a mark in the world of fashion. Extremely motivated for her first ever international competition at World Skills 2017, Abu Dhabi, she is keeping herself abreast with the latest trends in International fashion. She had worked with leading designer Afamado and has also interned with Pearl Global Ltd. Talat is a fun-loving person. She likes photography, calligraphy, sketching, gaming and collecting vivid items.
  • Simoul Alva

    Graphic Design

    "I'm humbled by this incredible opportunity and I want to do India proud." 21-year-old Simoul Alva is a Graphic Design student from the prestigious National Institute of Design (NID), India. Her age belies her maturity. During her education at NID, Simoul dabbled with typography, illustration, motion design and used her creativity to lend voice to some of the most complex issues of the modern world. From creating an illustration led campaign on substance abuse to an experimental animation on wage gap, Simoul's skills are eclectic and can range from subtle to nuanced to unorthodox. An awardee of the Ratan Tata Scholarship in 2015, she has also been recognised as one of the top 25-under-25 visual artists and designers of the country by GenX Tata Nano. She recently completed an exchange program at the ÉcoleSupérieured'Artet de Design de Reims, France.

    "Determined to Win" Anant Kumar is a young Woodwork Technician and performs part-time construction jobs like kitchen fittings, furniture-making and on-site installation work. He acquired his professional degree from Industrial Training Institute and has undergone training on modern power tools at an industrial firm - Caple Industrial Solutions. After getting through national selections at IndiaSkills, he has been focusing on WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017. Anant has been undergoing extensive training at I.EVO Udaipur, where he has received opportunities to learn from international experts. He is excited to represent India at an International competition and is looking forward to enhancing his knowledge.
